Appscio has released the source code for its media processing framework as open source software. The objective in doing so was to encourage widespread adoption in the academic and research communities. However, we recognize that many developers of proprietary algorithms frequently require the protection afforded by commercially oriented open source licenses.
MPF Code
Any source code or object library released by Appscio under the 'mpf-*' names ("MPF Code") is dual-licensed, at the user's option, under the terms of either:
- Apache License version 2.0 (http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.txt), or
- GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.1 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl-2.1.html/)
This licensing model allows the use of our MPF Code in as wide a variety of software projects as possible.
Some Appscio projects have slightly different terms, as follows:
- Appscio may elect to provide generally useful codecs or performance enhancements which are not available under open source licenses; in such case, the MPF version with those enhancements will be made available as a binary installable image, under license terms created on a case-by-case basis.
Third Party Code
However, the foregoing licenses do not apply to third party software that may be made available in connection with MPF Code or otherwise through Appscio; such third party software shall be clearly identified as such and shall at all times remain subject to the terms of the relevant license that accompanies such software. For more information about third party software, please see our Third Party Software page.
Trademark Policies
Although much of our code is open, it is very important that Appscio strictly enforce its trademark rights, in order to keep them valid. Our trademarks include, among others, the names Appscio™, Appscio™ Media Processing Framework™ and Appscio™ MPF™. (The full list is in the Appscio Trademark Policy as it may be updated from time to time; collectively, the "Appscio Marks") This means that, while you have considerable freedom to redistribute and modify our MPF Code, there are tight restrictions on your ability to use the Appscio Marks, even when built into software that we provide. Please review the Appscio Trademark Policy carefully as all use of the Appscio Marks is subject to the terms thereof.
